The Nordkapp conquered by Dnepr

Introduction

This is the account of a trip Karen and I (Paul) took to the norht cape in the early summer of 1995. We went on a Dnepr motorcycle.

There are two possibilities: the above is a clickable map, so you can either go to the desired location immediately or start at Enschede and take the whole tour with us by clicking the 'next lap' button in the top-right corner of each page

Why is it different on a Dnepr?

After some starting-up difficulties the trip starts out as a normal bike tour: a ride through a beautifull landscape, enjoying the freedom on a bike that runs just fine. After a while though, the technology takes over. Or perhaps I should say that technology is taken over by reality.

The Dnepr suffers from a lot of original parts, even the critical ones. And why they are critical she will show! During the trip the emphasis shifts from nature to nuts and bolts as the bike slowly falls apart from underneath us.

is this fun?

Yes!

Unlike western technology, which helps to conquer the world, Russian technology is a chalenge in itself. Driving this bike to the north cape and get her back home on her own power was a chalenge I gladly took upon myself. Karen proved a great help, she not only knows how to repair a wheel but also kept my spirit up through periods when I was almost ready to give up. But through all of this I am glad that the three of us (the Dnepr is definitely a personality) kept together an completed the trip in good health
